Abstract:

The technological and scientific development of extracorporeal life support (ECLS) has promoted the progress of modern medicine, provided an effective platform for the treatment of critical diseases, and raised new medical ethics issues at the same time. Ethical issues such as treatment benefit, resource allocation, and treatment endpoints of ECLS have become a dilemma faced by the whole society, especially doctors and patients. Proposing a solution to such ethical issues based on the interests of patients requires the coordinated promotion and supervision of multiple parties so as to maintain fairness and respect for patients in medicine. This review summarizes the evidence of the current ethical issues with ECLS in order to provide a reference for clinicians optimizing the application of ECLS.
