Abstract:

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation(ECMO) therapy has widely used in the past decade. Improvement in technology has made ECMO safer and easier. But there are no trials showing the merits of ECMO in improving survival or quality of life of patients. The time for its application is the most important influencing factor. Before application, it is important to define the indications and contraindications and adequate conventional treatment and individualized assessments are the prerequisites. This review summarizes the current knowledge about the two basic veno-venous and veno-arterial ECMO systems and describes some of controversies in this field.
