Abstract:

Objective

To analyze the incidence of spreading depolarization in patients with acute brain injury.

Methods

Quantitative electroencephalogram (EEG) data of patients with acute brain injury admitted to the intensive care unit of Xiangya Hospital of Central South University were retrospectively reviewed to analyze the incidence of spreading depolarization.

Results

Among the 37 patients with acute brain injury included, 14 had spreading depolarization with an average duration of 8.91±3.03 minutes. Amplitude integrated electroencephalogram (aEEG) decreased by 66.78%±9.31% on average from baseline.

Conclusion

Spreading depolarization has a high incidence in patients with acute brain injury, and it can be monitored by quantitative EEG, which may be an indicator of multimodal brain function monitoring in future.

Key words: Craniocerebral trauma, Electroencephalography, Spreading depolarization
