Abstract:

Objective

To collect the data on distribution of intensive care units (ICUs) resource in Eastern China, and to set up a database for the future construction and reasonable allocation of medical resources of critical care medicine (CCM), we investigated the status of CCM in Eastern China.

Methods

According to the Construction and Management of Critical Care Medicine (Trial) issued by Ministry of Health in 2009, we conducted a network questionnaire survey. The questionnaire included six items: hospital information as well as ICU-related general information, personnel, management, technical skills, and equipment configuration. The study objects included general ICUs of the hospitals of secondary level and above.

Results

Although the economy and population in Eastern China are relatively concentrated, ICU medical resources are not proportionally allocated: (1) this investigation includes 1154 ICUs with 14707 beds, and the ratio of ICU beds/population is the highest in China (4.03/10 million people) ; (2) As the developed region of the national economy, its ICU resource has not been consistent with the pace of economic development. The ratio of ICU beds/GDP ranks the 4th (6.99/billion) in the six major geographic regions of China; (3) The ICU construction of the tertiary hospitals is not superior to that of the secondary level hospitals, because the rapid expansion of hospitals make the development of ICU relatively slow; 4) The existing hardware facilities, human resources and medical technology of CCM are not consistent with the national standards.

Conclusions

In Eastern China, there is a gap between ICU construction and the national standards. These data provide an overview of ICU development in China.
