Abstract:

A spontaneous breath was found in a patient who was diagnosed as cerebral infarction and had no apparent neurological function. Esophageal pressure monitoring showed that the breaths were not triggered by the patient effort, so it was identified as ventilator auto-triggering. It turned out to be caused by a leakage of the breathing circuit, and the auto-triggering disappeared after the leakage was solved. Esophageal pressure monitoring could help to identify patient-ventilator asynchrony and improve clinical judgment and decision-making.

Key words: Auto-triggering, Patient-ventilator asynchrony, Esophageal pressure
